Steampunk Jellyfish with Texture (by Shirley)

Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying the festive season, it's hard to believe that we are into early December already.

I hope you are enjoying the designs by my teammates featuring the amazing & quirky Steampunk stamp sets, Steampunk Seaworld and Steampunk Funky Fish.  I especially love the Jellyfish!  I used stamps from both sets for my design below.

I had a lot of fun creating the background for this mixed media piece, I did not have a plan.   I started with Distress paints and then added a sand texture gel and a thin layer of crackle paste here & there.   I used a little mica powder over the sand texture and spritzed with water.  When dry I added Viva Crystal Gel (hologram) over the sandy areas.

I stamped the images with Cobalt Archival ink and coloured with Prisma pencils.  I used a metallic gold Gellyroll pen to highlight the cogs.

Thanks for your visit and have a great day,
Shirleyx

  1. Doesn't the gold look effective against the greens and I am really fascinated by the sound of the sand texture gel, it really looks good and shows on well in your photo.

All looks good here on the comments this morning.

  4. Really beautiful Shirley! I bought some 'sandy' texture paste on my recent visit to Berlin and I love it! That's a brilliant idea to use mica over the gel - I shall have to have a go at that! :) x

  5. This is so pretty Shirley and the sandy texture is wonderful and I am sitting here thinking if there is another way to get similar texture, perhaps by using some larger crystal embossing powder and perhaps colouring it with alcohol pens? Probably wouldn't work as beautifully as this though. I love the gold cogs and the jelly fish are adorable. x

  6. The gold Gellyroll detailing is gorgeous, making the metallic elements really stand out & great fun when contrasted with the softness of the Prisma coloured jellyfish. The shading of the latter is really enhances them. I'm intrigued by all the textures you've used for the background - there is such a semblance of rising bubbles & I love how the bacjkground created a yellow stream rising upwards as if emanating from the centre of those cogs.

  8. Hi Pat, I think that gluing chunky glitter or as you suggest chunky EP and then painting over top with either spray inks, watercolour, watered down fluid acrylic paints or alcohol markers would create texture as well. Have fun ! Shirleyxx
